Lack Calls for Burned Homes to Be Rebuilt Green

Ventura Business: Ventura Chamber of Commerce — January 9th, 2009

Participating in the recent Governoris Global Climate Summit in Beverly Hills, David Lack, president of Santa Barbara headquartered Lack Construction, spoke with Governor Schwarzenegger and, after thanking him for his support of our community during the fire, advocated that homes destroyed in the recent fires be rebuilt with green features and processes. The Governor responded that ithis is a very good ideai and indicated that he wanted to see it happen.

iThese fires are a devastating tragedy for thousands of Californians, but from this devastation we can salvage something positive for our future. We can rebuild homes that are less prone to fire, more energy and water efficient, and built with materials and procedures that are sensitive to the environment,i said Lack. Moreover, based on his experience in tear-down rebuilds and mold remediation, Lack believes there may be an opportunity to recycle some materials from the fires rather than add to our landfills.

Lack, attended the summit at the personal invitation of Governor Schwarzenegger, is a long-term proponent and financial supporter, locally and nationally, of the green building movement. His company, Lack Construction, was the first construction company in Santa Barbara to staff professionals accredited by the U.S. Green Building Councilis Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. In addition, in its construction work, the firm adheres to a set of Green Best Practices, developed by its associates. Earlier this year, Lack met with President Bush and encouraged him to build his Presidential Library to the highest (platinum) LEEDAE standards.

Lack urged all architects, contractors, sub-contractors and material suppliers to support the effort to rebuild green by helping displaced homeowners make smart decisions about how to make the rebuilding of their homes more green than the homes they lost in the fires. iFor example, strong consideration should be given to using recycled and regionally manufactured materials, which not only minimizes transportation costs but reduces the carbon footprint of the project,i said Lack.
